Viiratsi Angerjafarm has been engaged in the cultivation of European eel (Anguilla Anguilla) since 2013. Their main activity is raising European eels from glass eels to approximately 800 grams, ready for sale. The farm operates on a closed recirculating aquaculture system (RAS), which supports environmental sustainability. Special attention is given to the welfare of the fish and the quality of their growth environment. The farm is focused on energy and environmental efficiency. Viiratsi Angerjafarm has a production capacity of up to 60 tons of eels per year.
The primary goal is to raise eels for market purposes, aiming to provide this valuable fish for people’s tables. They market fresh eel as well as various eel products made in their small local kitchen. The product range includes live eel, smoked eel, marinated eel, marinated smoked eel, and stocking material.
Additionally, they contribute to the restoration of eel stocks in natural waters to support the fish population in Estonian waters. They offer suitable eel fry for stocking, as well as transportation and stocking services.
According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the HELCOM Red List, the eel is listed as a critically endangered species. The number of young eels reaching the Baltic Sea after their early years in the Atlantic Ocean has decreased by 97%. For this reason, the European Union has banned the capture of eels from the sea during three migration months.
